Thulusdhoo

A living island with a story to tell

Thulusdhoo is one of the most distinctive inhabited islands in Kaafu Atoll — not a private resort island, but a real Maldivian community with its own culture, industry, and identity. Located approximately 30km north of Malé, the island is renowned as the birthplace of the Maldives' soft drink industry and home to one of the most storied surf breaks in the Indian Ocean.

The island's community of around 1,500 people have lived alongside the sea for centuries. When you stay at RAYS Guesthouse, you stay within this community, not apart from it.

The climate is warm year-round. The north-east monsoon (November–April) brings calmer seas; the south-west swell (May–October) is when Cokes fires to its best.

Cokes surf break

Home of Cokes

Thulusdhoo is the address of Cokes — a legendary right-hand reef break considered one of the finest waves in the Indian Ocean. It draws surfers from across the world between May and October. RAYS Guesthouse is within walking distance of the break.

Thulusdhoo's underwater world

Thingiri Snorkelling Point is Thulusdhoo's signature underwater experience — an accessible, shallow-water reef teeming with life. Sharks glide through the blue in plain view, manta rays drift overhead, and the reef bursts with the colour of tropical fish, sea turtles, and extraordinary coral formations. First-timers and seasoned snorkellers alike find it genuinely breathtaking.

Further out, dedicated coral gardens and shark points offer deeper encounters for those wanting more. The reef system surrounding Thulusdhoo is rich and largely undisturbed — one of the finest in the central Maldives for accessible marine life.

Island life Thulusdhoo

Island life, undiluted

The morning fish market, the dhoni workshops, the fishermen heading out at dusk — these are not manufactured experiences. They are simply the island.

The island's Coca-Cola factory — one of the only soft drink production facilities in the Maldives — is a point of local pride, and the community's warmth towards visitors is genuine.

Please observe local customs — modest clothing is appreciated away from the beach.

Arriving at RAYS
